A DAY LATE AND A DOLLAR SHORT! Here are the ten pieces I illustrated for BITCHES BREW. There are two big ‘uns and eight wee ‘uns, all done with ink and watercolor on Arches. I wrote a short blurb for just one of the paintings, but the rest are without explanation.
JUDITH AND HER MAIDSERVANT, 9×12″
I tried to “cover” Artemisia Gentileschi’s Caravaggiesque masterwork, Judith and Her Maidservant, which I had the great fortune of seeing in person at a Caravaggiesque exhibit at the Uffizi in Florence last summer. Unsurprisingly, I loved that Gentileschi painting most of all, and despite changing some key elements in my cheap and tawdry version (I made Holofernes’ head more handsome, Abra younger, both women Asian, and both way nakeder), I tried to retain the composition, their gestures, and certain symbols (the Gorgon in the sword handle, the relief of David in the hairbrooch-cum-earring). I know it falls infinitely short of the original but I hadn’t hoped to approach its greatness, only to graze it with my elbow. Man. Can you tell I fucking love the original painting?!?!?!

The rest of the drawings will be available for sale online and in person at Park Life. BITCHES BREW runs through February 11.
