After we waved to each other from opposing crosswalks, the illustrious Adam M. commissioned me to draw whatever I felt like. He gave a couple broad suggestions, including the idea that I might draw a scene from a book that I’ve imagined, citing the After Dark drawing I did more than a year ago. So naturally, I turned to another Haruki Murakami novel. (I read other shit too, I swear). This illustration is based on an early scene from Dance Dance Dance, where the unnamed narrator drives Yuki, a sullen teenager, through a Hokkaido blizzard in a rented Subaru:

Here is the completed ink line drawing, with pencilled-in snow shapes, right before I began to apply watercolor:
And here is an incomplete version of the line drawing, sans background:
I really, truly loved drawing this. Thanks, Adam!

Daaaannnngggggggg. Amazeballs.
my face just melted off <3 tweeted @eee
this is so fucking great. your perspective and clean lines are amazing, it reminds me of the highly-precise, futuristic snowmobile drawings my uncle did when i was a kid (which consequently had a big influence on my urge to draw).
also really like the the super dry brush lines.
What’s that hairy thing between them? I haven’t read the book, but wikipedia says something about a Sheep Man. Is that him?
p.s. great as always
nope, that’s not the sheep man; it’s simply a fur stole draped over Yuki’s shoulder
Wow Hellen - ya’ve stepped up your game!
love this
This is gorgeous. I love it when you do really fleshed out backgrounds (as opposed to flat colors or patterns). Can’t stop staring at this.
wowza!
this is great! he is much younger/cuter than I imagined him when i read the book and she is a little older, here it looks like they could actually be lovers, it was much creepier in my head.
i love the colorful accents!
Hellen! Calvin brought it by last night and it looks even better non-digitally. Thanks again. Now I have to run out and get it framed before I ruin it. Yeaaaaah!
Adam! If you laminate it, it’ll make a great placemat. HYUK!
Absolutely gorgeous!
I saw the image and before reading the title thought, oh this totally reminds me of the book I’m reading, and right I was. Amazing! I love it!!
i’m pretty sure it was a toyota corolla he rented at the airport rather than a subaru(his almost new 2nd hand car).
