ISABELLA

09-Jul-10

I’m currently painting this drawing that Chris D., who previously commissioned the BOY painting, has asked me to draw. This, too, is from a film still, this time from the 2006 Hong Kong film, Isabella.

I’ve just barely started painting, so it will be a while before I post the completed, watercolored image, but I wanted to post the inked drawing to show my deep love of the line (and of drawing hair), as well as to remind the internet that I’m still around. xBLOG’Sx xNOTx xDEADx

FLORAL INDUSTRIAL COMPLEX

Miz Anne Koyama commissioned me, along with a whole bunch of other lovely cartoonists and illustrators, to re-interpret her Koyama Press logo (many of these commissions can be seen on the Koyama Press Facebook page). I chose to draw a group of teen thug Koyamas; THEY WILL FUCK YOU UP:

Recognize those shoes? FEIYUE, BITCH! I’LL NEVER WEAR ANYTHING ELSE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And no, I have never smoked cigarettes a day in my life. I just like to draw bad kids doing it, alright?

HEY FATTY DING DONG

I drew and painted this Post-It piece of shit for the Post It V show at GRNY later this month. I used brushpen, gouache, and four blue-green Post-Its:

They’re being sold as a set for eighty weighty bucks. As always, the Post-It show is “cash & carry”, so once you buy it, that shit’s GONE

THAT’S OYSTER MATH

Calvin and I did a short comic detailing our favorite moments of the Monster Ball concert we went to back in December (he did 3 strips, I did 2). This comic will be part of the MASSIVE Lady Gaga fanzine, Prison For Bitches, for sale to Canadians at TCAF this weekend (table 130!) and to the rest of us netizens sometime in the future:

I LOVE LADY GAGA

This will be printed in the forthcoming Lady Gaga fanzine, PRISON FOR BITCHES, edited by Sweet Meats Ryan Sands and Michael DeForge, debuting at TCAF next month.

And because someone over at my formspring asked about it, I decided to (poorly) document my process, from pencils to inks to paint:

First I did the pencil drawing, without sketches:

Then I added the GAGA CLAW:

I inked the eyes first, then the rest of the face, and hand:

I started in on the hair, Uzumaki-style:

Finished inking, but it looked empty to me,

so I decided to add the “LET’S MAKE A SANDWICH” headpiece, which I will not ink:

I started watercoloring, laying down flat colors, lightest first (skin and hair):

More flat colors, with some shading in the headpiece:

I added a second set of darker values to the flats to give them slightly more volume (though I kept this illustration relatively flat), and added the make-up and a ring of color around the pupils:

Finally, I tossed in that half-assed background for some much needed contrast, giving you the image at the top of this post. SUCCESS!
